The Helping Hand
A group of volunteer organisations come together to form the Good Neighbour Movement to welcome postwar migrants to Australia.
The Good Neighbour Movement is a group of volunteer organisations set up after the Second World War to help migrants settle into Australian society and promote better understanding between Australians and migrants. Thousands of people across the nation work voluntarily for the association; many were migrants themselves. They greet new arrivals, invite them to their homes, introduce them to clubs, take them to events and provide advice. About 300 affiliated organisations are involved including government departments, sporting bodies, women’s organisations, churches, media, employer organisations and trade unions. Presented by Morven S Brown, Professor of Sociology at the University of NSW, this program looks at the work of the movement, shares the experiences of several migrants and explains the citizenship and naturalisation process.
