The Fifth Façade

28m The Arts, History, Documentary, Biography 1973

The making of an icon: the construction of the Sydney Opera House, from selecting the site to the official opening.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most identifiable of Australian icons and among the great architectural masterpieces worldwide. Its entire construction was recorded on film. THE FIFTH FACADE documents the Opera House’s history, from the selection of the site at Bennelong Point to the official opening in 1973. The commentary of Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect who won the international competition for the original building design, details the unique structural and aesthetic problems that had to be solved to make his vision a reality.
