The Cars That Ate Paris

1h 28m Horror, Comedy 1974

The NFSA digital restoration of Peter Weir's Australian New Wave classic – a surreal black comedy set in a sinister small town.

In the hard-edged new future, anti-hero Arthur Waldo (Terry Camilleri) ends up in the rural Australian village of Paris. Taken in by the Mayor (John Meillon), Arthur must navigate the tensions between the corrupt town establishment and the wild new generation of Parisians – all of whom are concealing a horrific secret. More than 20 years before The Truman Show, director Peter Weir gives us a surreal black comedy in a sinister small town.
